I’m excited to announce that, starting today, you’ll see some channels on YouTube have a new design (including mine!). The new YouTube One Channel is only in limited beta now, but soon everyone will be able to use the new channel design.
Below are some tips that will help you get ready. Also, check out my new channel and some of the other channels that are using the new design- DeStorm, EpicMealTime, SORTED, MysteryGuitarMan, LOUD and Geek & Sundry.
Tips to get ready
1) Create a channel trailer to get people to subscribe
On your new channel, you can show a trailer that will only appear to viewers who aren’t already subscribed to your channel. This is your chance to let visitors know what your channel is all about and tell them why they should subscribe! Keep it short and to the point, and include a clear call to action inviting your audience to subscribe.
2) Create some channel art
Channel art is how you can express the personality of your channel wherever it is seen, whether on a mobile phone, a tablet, a TV, or in a hovercard anywhere on the site! Here is a template and guidelines on how to start creating channel art that will look great.

ReplyDeleteHeck, the example channels you linked don't even have that "channel art" that's mentioned, which doesn't help the rest of us to figure out what we're going to have to change to adjust to this new design most of us probably don't want!
Does the new channel design not allow for more creativity? It looks as if it's only the channel banner that can be changed now... The current design allows for you to add in more unique stuff. For example, RoosterTeeths channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/RoosterTeeth?feature=g-subs-u), they added text to the side of their design to more inform users/viewers of what those areas are for. It seems that this new design is just taking away from our combustibility of our channel.

YouTube and Twitch.Tv seem to be saying to users "You shouldn't be creative". Maybe it costs more money to allow that functionality. Maybe you guys forgot the reason Youtube exists as you try to conform to what made google work.
The problem is, there's a difference between google and Youtube. Google's simplicity is a necessity because creativity is not needed when you're searching. Simple, fast... efficiency is preferable.
But this doesn't work for Youtube, and it is COMPLETELY ass backwards when we're talking about distinguishing user creativity.
All I know is, I'm witnessing the creative life -- the thing that makes Youtube what it is -- drain out in favor of bland corporate symmetry. And I'm not happy about it.
And why do we need customization? Not everything needs to be customizable. And I'm telling the truth.

The ideal solution would be to have this new YT layout as the default, but allow channel and content creators to edit and customize their channels if they so choose.
Best of both worlds and nothing taken away from either side of this debate.

ReplyDeleteWhile I do like the universal banner and the design being unified with the rest of the site, I have a few issues with the new channel design.
ReplyDeleteIt feels very cluttered. It also looks like certain content will be harder to highlight since the new design is mostly horizontal. A lot of stuff will only be seen if the user scrolls down to see it. The featured video is pretty small. And the idea of a Channel Trailer is cool, but if it replaces the featured video spot, why bother? I'd rather have viewers see the most recent video uploaded as feature instead of a trailer. If there were a way to have both that would be great.
Oh, and one the last thing. The channel description is now on a separate page. Shouldn't it be right there on the front page with all the other featured content so the viewers have an idea of what the channel is even if there isn't a Channel Trailer?
Wow. I'm definitely not looking forward to this. Start fixing the things that ACTUALLY NEED FIXING. Channels don't need a new design, nor does the home page!

How in the hell would this simplified piece of shit layout that basically makes everyone's layout the same save for a fucking banner bring you more subscribers? Unless you have one hell of an awesome banner idea, you are just as screwed as the rest of us.
My channel background isn't great but I created it and I'm proud of it, Youtube making this mandatory (if they do) is Youtube saying goodbye to a lot of users. People who make a living designing channel backgrounds, or even people who have been working and making money through their videos have put their heart and soul into them. If all of their personality in their channel is taken away? That just means less views.
The current system is a good one because it allows people to catch a user's eye with the flash of a neat layout and background... Taking away customization has no foundation and all your reasoning for change being a good idea is based upon your own opinion, which contrary to your own selfish beliefs, isn't fact nor is it even a good opinion. You take a vote of everyone that saw these layouts and 99% of them will disagree with you.
My two cents is now over.

Delete1. You mention that YouTube is about the videos. Well, what makes the videos so special? The creator, the content in the video, the individual personality that comes from it. It would be extremely vanilla for everyone to have the same content the exact same way with no sense of individuality. YouTube is about MORE than just "the videos." It's about the community it entails, the Creators in that community, as well as the expressive freedom you have to publish your own opinion, thoughts, facts, whatever the case may be, about something you like.
2. You talk about why there's even the need for customization, and in this comment I talk about, refer to potentially having more customizable options. You are either for or against it, you can't be both.
3. You are entitled to your opinion. I'm entitled to mine. We can agree that we disagree. But that does not make YOUR OPINION superior and almighty to mine. We have our reasons. I'm not going to change your mind. You're not going to change mine. But, if you're a content creator, you will learn soon enough that acting as if you are the only correct person about anything will get you nowhere.... in life, and in the YouTube community. Have your own opinion, but respect others and theirs.
The point is, it's okay for everyone to have a different opinion. You like the new upcoming Channel Layout? Okay, that is fine. I am not so sure, at least until I can mess around with it myself. I'm open to seeing what it entails, but YouTube HAS made a lot of changes lately. It's a lot to take in. I see nothing wrong with the current Channel Layout, and I like the varied backgrounds each of the YouTubers I'm subscribed to has. My main worry is that everyone will all be the same. But again, I'm open to change, so we'll see what happens.

ReplyDeleteThis literally is the most boring channel display there has ever been. I don't know if there's an option where Justine might've chosen to leave hers white, but if they all look just like this, there will be absolutely no variation in channels, making each one look exactly the same as the last. I can tell that YouTube is trying to help people with subscriber counts and all from the "trailer" idea, which I think is really great, but having every channel basically look like a magnified version of the "recommended videos" sidebar of YouTube is so incredibly dull that anyone who isn't an avid YouTuber probably isn't going to be able to tell the last person they subscribed to from the next, which could actually make sub counts go down. Of course I don't know this for sure, but coming from someone who loves YouTube and spends a good amount of time on it, I don't want to have to look at channels like this everyday.

No one wants a new design and people like seeing the creativity that youtuber's put into their channels like backgrounds. It's fine if it's optional so if people want it they can have it but people like the old one so they should be able to keep it.

ReplyDeleteWhile I'm all for modern, clean, and simple, it seems to me this strips away any sense of individuality to the YouTube Creator. I know people who put a lot of time and effort into their channel design, making it look very unique and individualistic.
This seems to strip that away.
Now, if there is a customization feature we're not aware of (outside of the top banner), then it would be something to get use to, like everything else.
I wasn't a huge fan of the home page refresh, where now it doesn't by default show my subscriptions and their uploads only, but that's something I just pass over all the time.
But this seems to take away from the Creator themselves. I'm more casual, so it's something I easily could adapt to (I don't upload videos a lot, and the ones I do upload are much more casual). But it's nice to go to each channel and get a sense of that person by what their channel page looks like. It would suck to take that away from the Creators who appreciate that.
But again, I understand YouTube is a business, and they have a model to achieve. I just hope that in that model they don't forget completely about the Creator... and the community itself.

DeleteThis is a really bad design. First of all its's messy and confusing. Second of all it's so white and not personal. The other pages are more interesting and fun to look at. You kinda get to know them by just looking at the design. I get that it's supposed to be easier to access and wotk with. But this is not good at all.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a fan. I think parts of the layout have potential in terms of like expanding the existing "feed" tab. Channel customization is limited enough as it is, and I think that's an issue. I think the words of CGP Grey still apply, "YouTube Should be the World's Best TV, Not the World's Worst Social Network." The site should be focused on content and content creators (of all sizes) and remember that the most important part is the videos.

The subscriber and view counts should have commas and should be placed near the channel name for easier visibility.
Currently, the stats are placed in the "about tab" and are pushed to the bottom right. Moving this to the right of the channel name or below the subscribe button would be better.
The numbers are just one long run on with no commas. Adding commas would be nice.
Also, it would be nice if the links in the about tab would be in 1 column instead of 2 columns with 3 links in each.
Other than that, the new channels looks nice and clean, unlike the old channels. I like how the discussion tab is finally JUST for comments.
I'm gonna miss the custom backgrounds, but I think this is a huge step forward for YouTube with the new clean look.
I'm also loving the new flex width pages!
(New channels, video manager, and dashboard are the only pages with it currently)
I have a 1080p monitor and I have YouTube zoomed into 125% so the text is big enough to read and this allows the flex width to fill my monitor width.
I'm looking forward to more pages having the flex width to fill my whole monitor.
I really like the new changes for the most part. =)
It seems like a really bad design. It's too white and it takes away the personalized looks that some channels have. I personally prefer that layout which Youtube has right now.

Okay, so, let's be honest here,
ReplyDeleteI really like the idea of having the non-subscriber preview video for the channels. That's a really great idea and it prevents people from getting the wrong idea about how you youtube because of the last video you uploaded.
On the other hand, it looks like shit. It's cold. A lot of us watch youtube for the personalities it holds, but slowly your designs are stripping the personality out of it besides the actual videos. The white is assaulting to my eyes, and being on the computer a lot this isn't a good thing. The "art" you claim you get to personalize your channel with is far less art than we get on our channel right now, so I don't get what you're trying to pull there.
In the end, I love youtube and I will definitely use it regardless, but it'd be nice if I could enjoy it to the fullest. To be honest, the way youtube is now is perfect for the casual viewer, and so I understand why you do it, but it'd be nice if we were given options to have it set up another way, like when you let us have Panda.

I feel like they're mostly focusing on the cosmetics of the site rather than the actual performance. It's kind of sad that they ask for our feedback and yet, they'll just do the change regardless. This layout makes the site boring and hard to navigate for those who are new to the site. I feel like this is some 1984 shit, Big Brother is watching us, and if all the channel designs are not the same then there's a problem.

Just because some fuckwits on the internet have no conception of customization, it doesn't mean you have yo punish the whole of the community. You don't need to cater to people who don't know how to traverse a fucking webpage.
I think that the vast majority of the community will agree with me when I state that, you have already ruined most of the other appealing aspects of this website. The most recent change squished everything together and catered to the big partners.
What the hell happened to supporting the little guy? Remember the times when the smaller youtubers would be featured on the front page? And why do you have to force the bigger partner's videos on to my front page? If I wanted to watch their shitty videos I would look them up.
This change is taking away the personality of the website, it's draining every ounce of creativity from the community. How about you work on new options for the users! Options that would give the user more features, and more choice on their layout. Let the user Delegate their channels.
Why don't you stop compressing everything, forcing your top youtubers on us, and taking away user creativity.

I don't like it because it looks too cluttered. Everywhere you look is another link, another list, another option whereas the older design you didn't have it taking up every inch of the page.
ReplyDeleteAlso I like the old design. I liked the single video open at the top followed by one single list below, with the option to go and look at comments if you wanted to. I like that you can customise it and I think I'd probably stop using youtube if it turned like this, just because it would annoy me so much with it all looking exactly the same it being so cluttered. That's something for facebook in my opinion, not youtube. Youtube is entirely about your individuality and your content and I think you're undermining that by then making ever channel look exactly the same.
I like the customization ability, it what attracts me to vloggers. The more customised the channel, the more time I know they've spent on it and the more I want to watch their videos.
I'm sorry guys, I just don't like the new layout at all. I'd rather the current one.
This change sort of makes YouTube look like a machine that doesn't care about its users. It's very cold and clinical looking, what happened to the days when users mattered and the money making aspect wasn't such a big deal. It's YouTube not TRON, the user friendly aspect is quickly disappearing with each redesign.

ReplyDeleteI'm a Premier Partner since 2007 and been through a number of redesigns and this one is all about consistency on the many platforms YouTube now exists on.
ReplyDeleteHowever, even though we have over 80 channels it alarms me that our identities will be severely diluted by this layout and I would rather have to create a library of graphics for various platforms and have the current layout.
Having said that, on some of our channels less than 2.5% of our views are on the actual channel page and it may be that this is the underlying reason for the change. If this layout became the default for our videos instead of the standard watch page it would be worth the trade off.
That is just ugly. Very ugly.
ReplyDeleteI love and care about the Youtube creators I'm subscribed to, so I'll stay. But with the recent bad and ugly changes to Youtube, I would already be gone.
I think the biggest issue is the customisation, the custom background. It will hurt the identity of all the channels. Every Youtube creators will become just "another youtuber", without personality and identity.
Please keep the current channel design, if YOU really care about Youtube creators and all the people visiting your website everyday.
If not, well, it is not the first time a big compagny (and Google itself) dissapoints me. :(

ReplyDeleteBut seriously. Google/Youtube, your website's design can't handle that much white. You have barely any color in the website. If you add more red, it could work. I understand that youtube is a social network and you're trying to get what facebook is getting at but they handle colors a lot better.
Plus Youtube doesn't even handle well with bigger resolution screens. Everything is stacked to the left and my sign in is about 800 pixels to the right of anything. I really understand where you're going with the layout, but at the same time you're killing the amount of customization you can have in a channel. I think if you allowed us to change the color of our youtube page when people view it, it would be enough.

I feel like it stifles the creativity that the previous layouts had, and I don't see why the channel layout needed to change in the first place. If there's an option to allow me to keep my current layout, that would be great, because I wouldn't wish to have this change forced on me.

ReplyDeleteHonestly, I think this is hideous. It doesn't even look like a channel anymore, what with the sidebar and the shockingly white background. The only "channel art" that I can see is the banner, which is on the old channel design, so it's not as though we're gaining anything with that.
ReplyDeleteThe layout is awful – there are way too many links. For instance, at the top, underneath the youtuber's name, are links for home and videos and discussion and about and search. It just feels so unorganized, like it should all be spread out on the same page.
This channel doesn't allow for any creativity at all. Everything is going to look the same now. I think it's a mistake to switch to this design.

ReplyDeleteI dislike this layout. I'm open to change, but I think it's too... unorganized? I'm not sure how to word it. It's a bit hard to separate what you're looking for from everything else. I'm guessing there's a little area at the top for a banner(from looking at SORTED) and the links are alright. I think the video that starts when you get to the channel (??) is too small. The subscribe button and number should be a bit bigger as well. The right sidebar with featured channels is stuffy, while the left sidebar that stays makes me uncomfortable. Having the playlists show at the bottom of the page isn't very nice either. I'm not sure if the discussion tab is there to stay, but it shouldn't, as some channels would be sure to get a lot of hate. There should be color options, as well as a background option. I do hope this layout, if still implemented, will be optional. Clearly not very many like this new layout, and I'm still trying to get over the new homepage layout.

I like how it's seemingly easier to find stuff because the design is a bit simpler, and how with this channel pages would now match the general design of Youtube. Well, it's not like I go to youtube to look at pretty images at channel pages, I go there to watch actual videos so it doesn't matter that much to me.

ReplyDeleteGoogle/YouTube honestly needs to fire whoever's doing this web design (or assign them to another post, since this job obviously isn't for them.) It's cluttered and confining. The contrast is terrible. It reminds me of a house with a white picket fence, white siding, white interior paint, white furniture, white linens and plastic people. There's absolutely no contrast to differentiate objects. It's about as creative as a lump of melted plastic.
I have good color vision, yet I still have trouble discerning borders in your current color pallet (on a professionally calibrated IPS monitor.) Heavens help anyone who doesn't have good eyesight.
Design like this has the same forethought as the styling on Toyota automobiles, which is to say, essentially none. It's bland like off-brand oatmeal, the product of endless 'focus groups' and no good critical critiques.
And the stuck left-aligned issue still persists. 8" of blank white space on a widescreen monitor is a terrible design decision. I'm not even a proper graphic designer, and I know that's breaking all sorts of very inflexible rules.
Whoever it is that's heading this crusade to Google+ify the entire catalog of Google web holdings needs to take a nice whiff of the hate and frustration emanating from a majority of the 'YouTube Creator' community (among others) over things like this. Soon there will be a platform to displace YouTube, and you'll have nobody left to use your services. There will go your billions in ad money from Viacom, UMG and Sony Universal.
And I will laugh at your oblivion.
